Shalom and welcome to the JCC Summer 2019! We would like to welcome you and your child/children to our day camps. They will learn many new skills, develop socially, emotionally, and physically, as well as enhance his/her identity while having a great summer in the outdoors.
The JCC Parent’s Hand Book contains valuable information that will answer many of the questions that may arise throughout the summer. It will also help you and your child get the most out of your JCC Day Camp experience. Please read through this carefully and keep it for future reference. What happens during the camp day is successful only if parents are knowledgeable and involved.
Ensuring the safety of our children is our top priority at the JCC Day Camp. Before camp we will begin an extensive orientation and training for our carefully selected, enthusiastic and caring staff. The JCC Day Camp is known for its outstanding facility, experienced staff and excellent programming. Your child/children is sure to have a safe, fun-filled, memorable camp experience with us. Before and after camp child care will be available this year at the campsite and JCC in Wilkes-Barre for all campers for $25 per week for pre- or after care, or $5.00 per day. If your child is coming early to camp or staying late at camp, or at the JCC, please advise the camp director in advance and make checks payable to the JCC Day Camp. At the Center of the Camping Experience, is the heartbeat of the camp itself, its people and programs, its soul and its sprit. The greatest gift parents can give their children is the gift of roots of tradition and wings of creativity. Such is a summer experience at the JCC Day camps. Our Camping philosophy is best described by ACTIVE PARTICIPATION WITH A JEWISH FLAVOR. Campers participate in regular and special activities which utilize the richness of our Jewish religion and culture. Active means a day of scheduled activities in which campers are actively involved and doing something creative in every program that camp offers, regardless of age. Theses program areas include:
There will be times when the campers will have input into their schedules. The older campers will have more input as part of the development of their responsibility.
Our campers are on the go and are very active!
Camp Fees: The policy for all fees is stated in the camper’s application form.
ALL CAMP FEES MUST BE PAID IN FULL BY JUNE 1st, 2017 UNLESS OTHER SPECIAL ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE WITH RICK EVANS, CAMP DIRECTOR. The policy of the JCA and camp is that children are NOT scheduled for camp or bus pick-up if fees have not been paid.
We must have the following forms on file before your child can attend camp:

Prior to the start of camp, you will be receiving information concerning your child’s bus stop. Your child’s bus ride to and from camp will be a safe and enjoyable one. The BUS LEADER is the liaison between the driver and the children and is in charge of the bus. IF YOU HAVE ANY MESSAGES TO BE SENT TO CAMP, PLEASE GIVE THEM TO THE BUS LEADER IN WRITING OR CALL THE CAMP OFFICE BEFORE 1:00PM.
The routes and stops will be carefully checked prior to the start of camp. A few days are needed for the bus schedule to run smoothly so PLEASE BEAR WITH US.
Our Camp office is in direct contact with the camp busses by “Radio”. The radio is turned on at 7:00am and is kept on until every child is dropped off. In addition, he carries his cell phone to speak to the bus company.
The camp is in touch by bus radio at all times the children are on the bus.The camp day officially begins when your child boards the bus. Parents must supervise their children especially younger ones at the bus stop. In order to help us, please read the following:
If a child is brought to camp late; the parents MUST BRING THE CAMPER INTO THE CAMP OFFICE to sign in. Under NO circumstances should you drop off your child on the camp grounds and drive away.
Children should arrive to camp each day wearing comfortable clothing and closed toed shoes. Please send your child to camp only in clothing that can get dirty, as the campers participate in arts and crafts, outdoor games and other activities throughout the day. Also, please include a jacket or sweatshirt, particularly on field trip days. Each child wears their camp t-shirt every Friday. Please label all clothing, towels, shoes and bags!
Summer Day Camp T-Shirts have been ordered for each camper according to the size indicated on your camp application. All campers wear Camp T-Shirts every Friday. As all shirts look alike, be sure to label your child’s t-shirt.
We will accept grouping request for each camp session until 2 weeks prior to the start of each session. Requests must be made in writing on the application. We will make every effort to honor the grouping request, but we cannot guarantee placement.
The JCC does not assume any liability whatsoever for damage to or loss of personal possessions or failure of campers to adhere to strict dietary requirements while on a long trip sponsored by the camp. Every effort will be made to find kosher food while campers are traveling.
The Jewish Community Center operates 6 camp units. All activities are carefully conducted by competent, professional staff and counselors who insure the fun and safety of all campers at all times. Staff members are chosen on the basis of their warmth and feeling for campers, knowledge and understanding of young people and their mastery of camp skills.
The Center staff screens dozens of applications in order to select those persons whose qualifications and background or experience will contribute to the maintenance of the camp’s high standards. All aquatics staff are fully certified by the American Red Cross.
All staff participates in an intensive orientation program prior to the start of camp and is involved in ongoing training and supervision throughout the summer by the camp’s supervisory staff.
Camp policy states that no gratuities are given our staff. This includes both gifts and tipping. We request that you respect our policy on this matter. However, if you wish to show your appreciation to a staff member for your child’s enjoyable summer at camp, may we suggest a donation to the camp scholarship fund in that staff member’s name
The purpose of this guide is to provide parents with much needed information. If we missed an area of concern to you please feel free to call Rick Evans, Camp Director.
Parents may request a meeting to discuss their child or the camp program with the camp director or unit head prior to the start of camp, or by calling the camp director to set up a time during the camp season.
Please do not hesitate to call with any questions or concerns you may have. We do want to maintain close contact with all parents, making this a most rewarding and enjoyable summer camping experience for all campers, parents and staff.
A full time nurse is in the camp each day from 9:15am-3:30pm. Medications will be administered only on the written, dated and signed request of a licensed physician. The original label must be on the container with the physician’s instructions and the physician’s name. All non-prescription medication must be labeled with the child’s name and a dated request with specific instructions on how to dispense the medication.
DO NOT PUT ANY MEDICATION IN YOUR CHILD’S LUNCH OR SWIM BAG! This applies to prescriptions and non-prescriptions drugs. The Camp Director will be responsible for dispensing medication. If your child currently takes medication (other than antibiotics) that you intend to suspend before or during camp it is important to note that changes in medication can produce changes in health and behavior.
No one is better qualified to recognize and respond to the changes than you, as parents. The JCC therefore recommends against “medication vacations”. If you or your child’s physician feels strongly about suspending a medication within 6 weeks of your child’s camp experience, please contact Rick Evans, Camp Director; prior to the start of your child’s camp session.
Please do not send your child to camp with a fever or infection. Your child must be fever and infection-free for 24 hours before returning to camp. If your child is sent to camp sick, he or she will not be permitted to stay, and you will be called to pick him or her up.
If your child should become ill at camp, she/he will be brought to the Camp Office, and the Camp Director will call you. Your child will rest in the Camp Office until she/he is picked-up.
In the course of normal supervised play, children occasionally get injured. For more severe cases, the Camp Nurse will make an assessment about future medical attention. In most cases you will receive a phone call explaining the incident. Depending on the severity of the injury, your child may be taken to the hospital, and you will be notified immediately. A JCC staff member will stay with your child until a parent arrives.
While every effort will be made to maintain the health of each child, our camp, like others, may be subject to pediculosis (head lice). We offer several steps to keep such a situation under control.
If a case of lice is discovered at home, please report it to the camp. We keep details of reports and incidents confidential, but we need to alert parents about them.
Most children adjust to camp very quickly and easily, and, in fact, look forward to it. Occasionally, the experience may be questioned by the child, especially if it is a first-time experience.
To the child, camp is many things. It is an exciting time when the sun shines and one can be outside wearing light clothing, going swimming, and hiking, yelling, jumping and being with others.
Each evening talk with your child about camp. Ask him/her specific questions about camp activities, his/her counselors and specialists, and other campers. Younger children often need your help in remembering what they did at camp that day. Persistent resistance to talk about camp by campers is often an indication of a problem; do not hesitate to notify the camp director.
If Items are clearly marked with the child’s name, lost items are easily returned to the owner. Unlabeled items will be available for campers to search though each day. The camp is not responsible for lost items. Lost and Found is located next to the front office.
The policy of the JCC is to observe Kosher dietary laws at camp. All food and drinks served to our campers at lunch, cookouts, overnights, trips, snacks, etc., are strictly kosher.
Our Staff will be serving nourishing and varied lunches each day. Campers are encouraged to eat as much as they can, but are never forced to eat. Snacks are provided to all campers and staff. A camp menu for the entire summer will be available on our website, jccdaycamp.com prior to the start of the camp season.
Campers may not bring cash, toys, trading cards, money or expensive items to camp. We would feel awful if these were to get lost or broken. We are not responsible for toys, games, electronics and valuables lost or damaged at camp.
Aggressive toys such as pretend guns, knives, swords or any other type of weapon are never permitted at camp. Thank you for your cooperation.
Through participation in group activities, each camper will have an opportunity to add new skills and knowledge to that which is already familiar to him. A wide range of well-balanced activities, directed by a corps of trained counselors and specialists, is intended to help each camper get the most from his or her participation in camp life. Each age group explores a variety of Jewish themes through discussion, projects, guests, and activities with the Israeli Scouts and shlichim.
Oneg Shabbats are very special at camp. This is an inspiring time on Friday afternoons when the Shabbat is welcomed by the traditional candle lighting, blessing, and campers’ skits, dances and storytelling.
Camp never closes (except Tuesday, July 4th). Don’t let rainy days deter you from sending your child to camp. But please, include a raincoat, hat and boots. Some rainy day activities are scheduled at the Alan Rosenberg Memorial Indoor Facility at our campsite.
Your child should bring their clothes in a bag which closes securely. Please write your child’s name on the outside of the bag. Having a backpack makes it easier for your child to carry their swimwear, carry projects and daily items like sunscreen. We will have a place for your child to store their backpack during the day. Please do not send irreplaceable or expensive items. See the checklist for suggested contents. If you are sending a note, medication or other vital items, please let the Camp Office know in advance. Be sure to include a large zip lock plastic bag for wet bathing suits. Please check your child’s bag each day for important notes and projects sent home!
Successful participation by a child in any group activity is determined by physical, mental and emotional maturity. Learning to swim is a challenging (and sometimes difficult) experience but at the same time, one of the most enjoyable and rewarding. Campers should prepare for swim each day at camp, bringing their swimsuits and at least 2 towels. Swim lessons are provided to all campers on all days except Fridays. Free swim will be available at the end of each camp day.
The aquatics program at camp is based upon the AMERICAN RED CROSS swimming skills progression. Our major concern will be building positive attitudes toward being safe while in or around the water. The aquatics staff will strive to provide each and every camper with a rewarding and fun-filled summer.
Birthdays that fall during the summer are wonderful to celebrate and we recommend it! If there is a birthday you would like to celebrate on your child’s behalf, contact the camp five (5) days in advance. In observance of Kashrut (Kosher dietary laws), baked goods must be ordered by Sara Pisarz for camp @570-639-1889 or 570-357-4650.
We celebrate Shabbat every Friday, with a sing-along blessing recitation and special snack of challah and grape juice. We have found that this tradition is fun for all campers, even those who do not observe Shabbat at home. We say blessings for the candles, “wine” (grape juice) and challah. The blessing (brachot) are listed below for your convenience.
For the candles: Baruch atah Adonai, elehainu melech ha’olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav vitzivanu l’hadlik ner shel Shabbat.
Blessed are you, our G-d, ruler of the universe, who has commanded us to kindle the Sabbath lights.
For the Wine or Grape Juice: Baruch atah Adonai, elohainu melech ha’olam, borei pri hagafen.
Blessed are you, our G-d, ruler of the universe, who has created the fruit of the vine.
For the Challah: Baruch atah adonai, elohainu melech ha’olam, hamotiz lechem min ha’aretz.

Independence Day: There will be no camp on Tuesday, July 4!
Tisha B’Av: We will hold camp during Tisha B’Av and we will observe the holiday appropriately. No meat will be provided during the nine days

The Jewish Community Alliance strives to provide a safe, well supervised, and fun experience to all of its campers. While it understands that campers sometimes have behavioral issues and does what it can to support a camper, at no time will these issues be permitted to endanger the safety of the camper, of other campers, or of camp staff.
These issues: intentional kicking, hitting, biting and bullying are never permitted at camp. They will result in the following steps being taken as outlined below. Please assist us with explaining to your child what behaviors are and are not appropriate at camp and what the consequences are of inappropriate behavior.
The first time an incident happens will result in a phone call home. Your child’s Unit Head will explain to you what happened and that such behavior is not acceptable. The camper may automatically be given one day suspension from camp, with no refund for that day. Staff will explain the policy to the parent.
The Unit Head will also contact the parent of the recipient of the incident, so that they are aware of what has occurred and assured that the matter is being dealt with appropriately.
The second time an incident occurs will result in a second phone call home from the Unit Director. At least one day suspension will be given, if not more (with no refund) and it will be explained to the parent that the next occurrence will result in the camper’s expulsion from camp without a refund.
The Unit Director will also contact the parent of the recipient of incident, so that they are award of what has occurred and assured that the matter is being dealt with appropriately.
The third incident will result in immediate expulsion from camp without refund. The Camp Director will make final determination for expulsion.

Camp is a fun and rewarding experience for children. Many generations of families have come to the JCC Day Camp and enjoyed every minute of it. However, should you find that your camper(s) are not, let us know! Our camp staff want to make your child(ren)’s camp experience amazing.
